It has already been discussed that in home cinema installations the measure of reverberation time is actually the time it takes the sound to fall by 60 dB. This is not particularly relevant psychoacoustically, and it is also very difficult to measure in situ. This is due to the presence of background noise in the home cinema room, either unwanted or the music being played, which often results in less than 60 dB of energy decay before the decay sound becomes less than the residual noise in the environment.

Even in the quieter environment of a Victorian town in the days before road traffic, Sabine had to do measurements, using his ears, at night to avoid the results being affected by the level of background noise. Because we rarely hear a full reverberant decay, our ears and brains have adapted, quite logically, to focus on what can be heard. Thus we are more sensitive to the effects of the first 20 to 30 dB of the reverberant decay curve, the 60 dB reverberation is directly proportional to the earlier curves and so this should not cause any problems when measuring in custom dedicated home cinema installations.

However, if the curve of a home cinema room is of the double-slope form, then this simple relationship is broken. The net result is that, although the T60 reverberation time of the home cinema may be an appropriate value, because of the faster early decay to below 30 dB we perceive the cinema's reverberation as being shorter than it really is. The psychoacoustic effect of this is that the dedicated home cinema sounds 'drier' than one would expect from a simple measurement of T60.

Modern home cinema designers therefore worry much more about the early decay time (EDT) than they used to when designing dedicated home cinema systems.

Component to HDMI

Everyday, consumers seek to remedy their interconnection problems by attempting to connect HDMI to Component outputs via a cable linked to their high-def setup. This isn't a simple matter of rearranging your wires or having the right type of connector, unfortunately. Analog and digital are essentially incompatible, much like the fast approaching television broadcasting switch to digital from analog signals, which can be received by rabbit ears or a roof antenna. If you heard that HDMI is superior to Component cables, and you would like to convert Component to HDMI, hold on just a moment. There are numerous studies available showing that HDMI cables and digital are superior in theory. This is because there are a lot of potential conversions between the various lines of resolution before it is finally displayed on your television set. For this reason, there are occasions when Component connections deliver a better signal and picture. Most of all, this is the case when cable lengths begin to exceed 25 feet. To determine the cable that delivers you the best picture, try out each of the cables if given the option.

Mario Vs Sonic - The History of These Two Gaming Giants

In the 60's and 70's it was The Beatles vs Rolling Stones. In the 80's it was Lakers vs Celtics. In the 90's the topic that saw so many schoolyard arguments was indeed Mario vs Sonic. Who would win in a fight? Who would win in a race? Who cooks a better omelet? You name it, it was argued. There were no characters as recognised to children of the 90's as Sonic and Mario, with Sonic's "Q Score" (a rating that rates something based on it's popularity) even surpassing that of Mickey Mouse. With such results, it seemed obvious this rivalry wouldn't die out quickly.

Contrary to popular belief, Mario made his debut in the 1981 Donkey Kong game for the arcade. Although he was called "Jumpman" he looked exactly the same as the Mario that appeared in the first game with his name in the title "Mario Bros." This was a basic game that didn't scroll, and it required killing all the enemies in a "Phase" and then progressing to the next phase. In this age, it is hard to see the appeal of this game, but in it's time it was rather entertaining.

Mario's game that propelled him to the status of a household name was the first "Super Mario Bros" for the NES which is now the best selling video game of all time. This was the first side scrolling Mario game and it set a standard for all the 16 bit Mario games to come. While it was not the first side scrolling platformer, it was the first done well, and allowed other developers to copy the formula. For this reason, this game is hailed by many as the saviour of the video game industry as the industry was in a great deal of trouble before it's release.

Possibly more noteworthy, was Mario's transition into the 3d world. Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 received perfect scores from countless professional review companies. It is still seen today as the best ever 3d platformer, and many have tried but failed to replicate the success of Super Mario 64.

Sonic's creators knew from the beginning that Sega needed a mascot for it's Genesis/Mega Drive system that could help market it's console to compete with Mario and the Super Nintendo. They looked at Mario and perceived him as stuffy and uninteresting and decided to tap into the younger generation who was after something "cooler" with more attitude. After many considerations including "Mighty the Armadillo" Sonic the Hedgehog was decided on and a team of 15 began work on what would be the first Sonic game, "Sonic the Hedgehog" for the Genesis/Mega Drive.

Popular opinion said Sonic didn't really hit his straps until the second game for the 16 bit console. In this his little sidekick Tails was introduced and collecting all the chaos emeralds saw Sonic transform into "Super Sonic" which was a yellow, super fast super strong version of the character.

Sonic's 3d games however have not seen the success of it's rival Mario. Sonic 3d Blast for the Genesis/Mega Drive was an average attempt, and it wasn't until the Dreamcast where we saw a 3d Sonic game that was really worth playing called "Sonic Adventure." However, since creating that formula that worked perfectly, Sega have made odd choices with games forcing you to play as Sonic's less entertaining sidekicks to access the fun Sonic levels. Sonic the Hedgehog on the 360/PS3 received awful reviews. Sonic and the Secret Rings for the Wii seems to be the only game since Sonic Adventure that has really got it right with Sega finally realising that what made the originals so fun, was Sonic's blistering speed.

Sega's decision to no longer create consoles has no seen the creation of the first game where Mario and Sonic can go head to head called "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games." After selling about 1 million copies of this game, it is clear this rivalry is still alive and kicking. Many have no doubt thought back to those schoolyard arguments and thought "Finally! I can prove x is better than y!"

My advice hear is to make sure your center , front and surround speakers are all from the same manufacturer and share the same design and driver size, this is called timbre matching and creates a smooth open sound.Recommended brands here would be, Paradigm, B&W, Polk, Meridian and the ones I own and love Definitive Technologies (that's right I did not mention Bose).But we all have different tastes, go listen to a few for yourself. Finally, you have your DVD player or recorder. If high definition is important to you, get a blu-ray.

ASUS EEE 901 Unveiled

At Computex 2008 in Taiwan, the new ASUS EEE 901 PC was unveiled. There has been a great deal of speculation about the upgrade for the last month in the computer press. Much of the speculation was absolutely accurate.

You'll find the new machine will have an Intel Atom TM 1.6 GHz. Processor. This is no surprise as the computer press has been speculating only on the speed of the processor. For those who are unfamiliar with Intel's new Atom TM processor we have a complete article about it.

The remainder of the specification seems to be totally in line with the old EEE PC 900. Old as ASUS stopped taking orders for the 900 before Computex. There is the choice of either the familiar Windows XP or Linux. Both systems sell for the same price but the Linux PC will have 20 GB of disk space compared to 12 GB for the Windows XP version.

One enterprising computer Blogger on "Electricpig" has already taken an EEE PC 901 apart and has found some interesting features on the mother board. You will find there is a connector for a SIM card to be installed and also space for PCI-E card which has the potential for WiMax. No doubt upgrades will come along to the ASUS 901 when they have been put through their paces.

An excellent machine has been given a boost of a better processor and it should beat the competition, or will it? One of the problems for ASUS is that the disc space on the EEE 901 is very limited. One thing advertised at Computex was the offer of 20 GB of web-based storage for the ASUS EEE user. This offer seems to be only available for 1 year, and so is limited. It seems that this is an acknowledgment that the storage on the EEE is not quite big enough. There is also now strong competition. There are two entry-level HP2133 computers that look better than the ASUS that either have 4 GB of solid state disc or a 120 GB hard drive. In many markets the 120 GB version will sell for the same price as the ASUS EEE 901. There are also offerings from Dell and MSI that look very promising but some details are not yet available.

Competition will be high in many markets for these machines and it will only be by looking at the advertising that you will find what you are really being offered. Personally, I would get a Linux PC and take the benefit of the extra disk space. Many people are too technologically challenged to make the time to learn a new operating system, and they will stick with what they know. The major problem for business and home computer users is that there is no option with this machine to run Vista in any shape or form. It seems that Microsoft will be happy to let XP continue provided it is only for these sub-notebooks.

New Year's Resolutions

Here we stand, poised on the brink of the New Year -and what, exactly, are you planning to do about it? It's time for all those New Year's Resolutions... and this year, why don't we think about making a commitment to something we can truly keep?

If you've been spending a monthly fee on a gym membership but have become somewhat fuzzy on exactly where the gym is, it's time to get out of it. If you're on a contract, find out if there is a way to get out of it. If you're on a month-per-month basis, end it now. Let's face it: if you've been not going to the gym for a prolonged period of time despite the fact that your hard-earned cash is making it to their hot little palms every month, you're probably not going to start going just because you've ripped the last calendar page off of 2008.

Buy yourself a Wii and a Wii Fit. Heck, even if you just buy yourself a Wii, you're probably doubling the amount of couch exercise you get! Once you feel comfortable in gym clothes again, maybe you can drag that old gym membership out of mothballs...and this time, the gym may even work to stimulate your social life.

Another thing: use the New Year as a reason to not say anything mean about anybody. Better to choose a variety of sources: me, for instance, and a salesman at a really good men's store, to which you never, ever go without a voice of reason.

Sales people will try to sell you these things because their sales are being tracked for commission or other benefits, and because after looking at box after box of newly arrive white button-down shirts and blue pants, the orange sings to their creative spirits. The fact that their companies work very hard to make them believe they are selling the very finest of men's merchandise makes them want to share their good fortune with you. So bring a voice of reason. This should be a person with relatively good taste that will laugh at you like crazy when you emerge from the dressing room in the orange shorts and not a person who will say, "Hey, I want a pair of those in fuchsia!"

And please, make this the year that you are prepared for every funeral, every wedding, every major life event. Go now, during the sales, and buy yourself a beautiful dark suit, and good white shirt, and two smart ties - one in a somber tone and the other in a festive tone. Ethical shopping is a subject much discussed at present but what does it actually mean to consumers? Our newspapers are full of tales of factory farming, climate change, sweatshops and child labour and it has been suggested that any purchase involves moral choices. After all a number of mainstream retailers have been implicated in scandals about child labour and sweatshop working but we continue to buy from them. In an ideal world of course we wouldn't even be talking about ethical shopping because it would be the norm.

Until fairly recently ethical shopping was a niche market but it is becoming more mainstream as people become more aware of environmental and ethical issues. Numbers of people buying organic or Fairtrade continues to rise as it becomes more accessible and receives a higher level of support from retailers but it is still a small part of the overall market.

There is a huge buzz of interest about sustainability or development which meets present needs but does not compromise future generations. Unfortunately, indifference, yours, mine, theirs, to the issues is very real, I am not taking the moral high ground here I am as guilty as the next person. Perhaps we should start out by having a system of labeling on clothing denoting that it has been produced responsibly enabling consumers to make more informed choices.

SMITH 2.0 SSE Check out the newest shoe series from pro skater Ryan Smith. These shoes have a sort of matte fadded suade look and come in all one solid color. Black or Dark Chocolate. Both are very nice. Like most of Dc's Shoes the Smith 2.0 SSE feature excellent cupsole construction, foam padded tongue and collar along with awesome grip and flex. If you want a smooth, classy look then these are the skate shoes for you.

Going Hiking? Throw Your Boots Away

Really! Well at least leave them home. Since you lift your feet with every step, wearing lightweight running shoes can save more energy than reducing the weight of any piece of gear in your pack.

Grab those lightweight running shoes. You know. The ones you wear every day because they're so comfortable. Wouldn't you like to be comfortable when you're hiking, too? I'll bet you've never said, "I think I'll go out in the woods today just to be miserable." Let's do some quick math. The average running shoes weigh around 1 3/4 pounds and the average hiking boots weigh about 3 3/4 pounds. That means you're lifting an extra pound with every step. Since there are about 2000 steps in a mile, you're lifting an extra ton every mile. Things that lift a ton are supposed to be called heavy duty cranes.

That old saying of one pound on your feet being equal to five pounds in your pack is more than true.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need a pair of boots because you're hiking. Let's consider some of the concerns that make hikers think they need boots. You don't want to get an ankle sprain. Lighter shoes and loads reduce your chances of severe ankle sprains. You're more balanced and not apt to trip on rocks and roots.

Backpackers think they need to keep their feet dry. It does help to keep the blisters away. When heavy, leather boots get wet they stay wet. When you wear your running shoes and rain and dripping dew from trailside plants get your shoes wet, they quickly dry out. For stream crossings, you can take your socks off before crossing if you like. If it's getting into cold seasons I still prefer athletic trail shoes that are waterproof and light. The ones I occasionally use are 2 pounds 9.4 ounces (size 10).

Hikers worry that running shoes won't give them enough cushioning under their feet. Quality running shoes need to cushion the feet. When you buy your running shoes, check the insole (the inside of the shoe) and the outsole (the part that contacts the ground). If the sole is soft, it can absorb shock better. You don't want to be poked by every rock, but you don't want the hardest sole you can find either. The last is the part of the shoe that curves in slightly near the arch of the foot to conform to the average foot shape. You may not have paid much attention to the arch support in your running shoes, especially if your shoes are more for everyday wear than actual running. For hiking, you will want to make sure the arch support is right for you. Order a catalog from one of the companies that specialize in athletic shoes. You'll notice that these catalogs describe the height of the arch support in their shoes.

Some hikers like to remove the insole and add one that has more cushioning. Be careful when doing this because your foot will tend to swell when hiking and a thicker insole can make the shoe too tight and cause blisters.

If you have foot discomfort when you hike, consider being fitted for orthotics. I had pain in one foot while playing racquetball and orthotics made the condition much better. I've talked to backpackers who swear by their orthotics.

After you've experienced the freedom of lighter hiking shoes you probably won't want to wear your old hiking boots even on the toughest of terrain. The increased agility of running shoes is more noticeable on rough terrain.

Backpackers might think they need boots to keep debris out of their shoes. You can add a pair of 3-ounce gaiters and still be much lighter and more comfortable in running shoes.

Shoes that aren't labeled running shoes can be effective, too. You might like your cross trainers, but be wary of flat shoes that are primarily court shoes. You'll feel less cushioning on rough terrain and you'll slip on wet surfaces. Shoes that are labeled "trail runners" are usually very good because they're basically a running shoe that's built for tough conditions. My trail runners weigh only two ounces more than my running shoes.

When you purchase your shoes remember that fit is everything. Be careful not to try them on early in the morning. Your feet tend to swell a little during the day. Try both shoes on since most people have one foot that's a little larger than the other. Of course, always walk in the shoe. It may feel far different than when you're sitting down.

Make sure there's plenty of wiggle room in the toe box. Wear your thick hiking socks because that will change the fit a little. Make sure the shoes fit you in such a way that your heel can't slide up and down and your toes can't rub against the top of the shoes causing blisters. Don't rely on a "break-in" period. If the shoe doesn't feel good right away, try others. There are plenty of choices.

Be sure to buy shoes that are big enough, especially if you're planning a thru hike. Backpackers who hike the long trails often talk of ending their trip with a bigger shoe size than when they started. If you're going to hike one of the long trails, consider leaving your support person with the style and store where you'd like to buy your shoes if you need replacements. But wait until you're hiking before giving your support person the size and re-supply point at which you'd like the replacement shoes.

Go ahead and take that digital scale with you when you're shopping for running shoes. Actual shoe weight can differ greatly from the stated weight.

Some hikers have a separate pair of sandals for camp. When you hike in lightweight running shoes, you'll most likely decide you don't need the camp sandals anymore. There are some sandals that are built for hiking, and some backpackers like the feeling of freedom sandals give. There are obvious disadvantages like abrasions from rocks. Experiment on shorter hikes if sandals are appealing to you.

Another great advantage of lighter hiking shoes is the reduced impact on the environment. Every step is truly lighter and easier on nature.
